General Landscape Lighting Design
A key factor in general landscape design is when you consider the purchase of a low voltage transformer for your project, be aware that transformer housings come in varying materials. If your transformer is going to be placed in the open environment or buried in the ground, for a bit more money, a stainless steel housing is well worth the money. In sizing your transformer, we recommend that it be oversized by about 20 %. This allows your transformer to run cooler extending its life, and enables the homeowner to install a few additional fixture without additional upgrades.
We also recommend that individual lines running from the transformer do not exceed a length of 90 feet. Voltage drop is a natural occurrence in low voltage landscape lighting and becomes more apparent with longer landscape lighting lines. This creates situations where lighting fixtures at the end of the run light up much dimmer than those closest to the transformer.
Landscape lighting visions vary tremendously from individuals that desire very subdued illumination to those that desire the front of their homes resemble the Las Vegas strip. My own taste takes me to a place in the middle blending functional lighting where it needs be and decorative lighting in selected focal points in the landscape. Working with a good landscape designer will go a long way in achieving your own vision.
